Emily Cohen
Vogler, Christopher. The Writers Journey. Studio City, CA: Michael Wiese Productions, 2007.
Summary:
This section in Vogler is about many different people that the hero could meet on his or her journey.
A type of character that the hero encounters is the threshold guardian. The threshold guardian is in the story to test the hero.
Another type of archetype in the hero’s journey is the herald. The duty of the herald is to “issue challenges and announces the coming of significant change”. The herald is a need for change.
Another character that the hero comes into contact with is the Shapeshifter. The shapeshifter “appears to change constantly through the hero’s point of view.” Shapeshifter also adds suspense and character to the story.
Another Character that is encountered in the story is the shadow. The shadow’s function is to show what we do not like about ourselves and to “represent the power of repressed feelings.”
An important character in the story is the ally. The ally is important for many reasons such as being a companion and to provide comic relief in the story.
Reflection: In my opinion, I think that all these characters are very important to the development of the hero and to make the story interesting. I think that out of all the characters in this section the most important one is the ally. I think this because the ally is always there for the hero and gets him talking so we learn my about the hero through the eyes of the ally. Another reason I think the ally is important is because it gives the hero some form of comic relief which can make the story more interesting.
Questions:
Which character in this section to you think is the most important why?
In today’s society how necessary is it for the people we considered heroes to have allies or side kicks?
What are some different forms that the herald can take?

Question 1:
I think the most important character is the threshold gardian because he tests the hero, which makes him think about what he is doing, and making sure the hero is doing the right thing.
