Annotated Bibliography pages 83-105

Annotated Bibliography pages 83-105
Vogler, Christopher. The Writers Journey. 3rd edition. Studio City: Michael Wiese Productions, 2007.
Summary: In this section many things are discussed. Vogler first discusses the ordinary world in detail. The ordinary world is the beginning of the hero's journey. It tells the reader what the hero is leaving behind and also what is missing from there life in general. One of the first things the audience experiences is the title. The title can either intrigue the audience or make them not want to see or read the story. Also the ordinary world needs to provide some contrast in relation to the "special world". The example that is given by Vogler is the wizard of oz Dorothy starts out in a bland black and white world but then enters the "Technicolor" world.
Also in this section Vogler discusses the call to adventure. In this section of the book he talks about how to get the story moving and how some writers use the alluring technique to get the hero out of his or her ordinary world.

Reflection: I think that the description the Vogler gave in this section describes what I am trying to do in my personal story about the whale. This section gave me a better understanding about how I should go about making the contrast between the ordinary world and the special world greater.
Questions:
What are some examples of titles that really work for the story and some examples of titles that do not?
In this day and age how much of a contrast do you think we need between the ordinary and special world?
Has anybody ever used the alluring technique to get you to leave your ordinary world? Describe.

Emily Cohen
Vogler, Christopher. The Writers Journey. Studio City, CA: Michael Wiese Productions, 2007.
Summary:
This section in Vogler is about many different people that the hero could meet on his or her journey.
A type of character that the hero encounters is the threshold guardian. The threshold guardian is in the story to test the hero.
Another type of archetype in the hero’s journey is the herald. The duty of the herald is to “issue challenges and announces the coming of significant change”. The herald is a need for change.
Another character that the hero comes into contact with is the Shapeshifter. The shapeshifter “appears to change constantly through the hero’s point of view.” Shapeshifter also adds suspense and character to the story.
Another Character that is encountered in the story is the shadow. The shadow’s function is to show what we do not like about ourselves and to “represent the power of repressed feelings.”
An important character in the story is the ally. The ally is important for many reasons such as being a companion and to provide comic relief in the story.
Reflection: In my opinion, I think that all these characters are very important to the development of the hero and to make the story interesting. I think that out of all the characters in this section the most important one is the ally. I think this because the ally is always there for the hero and gets him talking so we learn my about the hero through the eyes of the ally. Another reason I think the ally is important is because it gives the hero some form of comic relief which can make the story more interesting.
Questions:
Which character in this section to you think is the most important why?
In today’s society how necessary is it for the people we considered heroes to have allies or side kicks?
What are some different forms that the herald can take?

Which Disney Character would I be?

If I were any disney character I think I would be Mrs. Potts from the Beauty and the Beast.
I think I would be her because she keeps an eye on the romance that is developing and likes to have her nose in their business, and to help their love progress. I think that I fit this aspect of her because I love to hear people talk about their relationships and give them advice on what they might want to do if a problem should arise.
I also think I would be her because she is the primary mother figure in the movie. She keeps a look out on what is going on in the castle and takes a motherly role towards everyone in the movie such as her child Chip and Luminare. I think that I take this kind of role in every day life because I think that I like to look out for everyones safety and try to help everyone out in the long run. Another reason why I think I fit this motherly role is because I like to give out advice when asked for it.
